Dave Ramsey Review
Who Is Dave Ramsey?
Renowned financial whiz Dave Ramsey hosts the nationally-syndicated radio show “The Dave Ramsey Show,” and is also well-known for his bestselling book The Total Money Makeover. He believes that “goals are bite-sized” visions, and makes his career helping people get out of debt, get their expenses under control, and prepare for retirement.
The Details
The bearded, bespectacled wizard understands that many people don’t really know where their money is going each month. They don’t have their finances under control, and that’s where he comes in. He’s been putting people on the right path for decades, making himself the Everyman’s financial advisor.
Total Money Makeover
Dave’s most popular book, a New York Times bestseller, Makeover outlines seven steps to finding financial freedom.
- Step one – is setting up an emergency fund, just a thousand dollars you sock away and don’t let any enticements pry from your hands. If you need money for medical treatments or other emergencies, it’s there. Otherwise, it’s saved.
- Step two - is for erasing that debt. List your debts from highest to lowest and start slicing through the lowest debt first. Once those get paid off, funnel the extra money into your higher debts. This is called the Debt snowball.
- Step three – takes us back to that emergency fund: once you’re out of debt, build that fund back up to three to six months of living expenses.
Reviewing the book, Publisher’s Weekly said Ramsey “provides the brutally direct truth about the hard work it takes to become free of debt, and his directness is a great part of the book’s charm.”
After the book’s publication, Ramsey added a 245-page workbook, making things even more concrete for the user.
Ramsey’s other books include Financial Peace and More Than Enough, both NYT bestsellers.
Financial Peace University
Ramsey fans who benefitted from Financial Peace can enroll in Dave’s Financial Peace University, a thirteen-week online course that even involves homework. The course teaches cash flow planning, debt elimination, investment, and accumulating savings. Dave can boast that the average graduate from this course pays off $5,300 in debt and saves $2,700 in thirteen weeks.
The Dave Ramsey Show
Helping people is what Ramsey is all about, and he’s too energetic and boisterous to confine his wisdom to the pages of books. That’s where his radio show, broadcast daily from 2-5 p.m. EST, comes in. Callers present their debt problems and Dave helps them out. Showing he’s no stodgy old fuddy-duddy, Dave includes lead-in music with the rocking sounds of David Bowie, The Shins, and Arcade Fire.
A graduate of the school of hard knocks
There are a lot of self-styled gurus out there, and it sometimes seems the only thing they know how to do give instructions to others. How do you know this information is trustworthy, that the person behind it knows what he’s talking about?
Well, Ramsey knows how to cut through a mountain of debt. Early in his life, he showed he could pile up an income, with a net worth of more than a million by the time he was twenty-five. But he also lost everything, and had to start all over again. He realized he had to learn how money works, so he began interviewing everyone he could and reading everything he could. But he finally understood that his financial woes were his own responsibility. Holding himself accountable, he was able to succeed, and that’s the spirit he shares with his readers and listeners.
His website is absolutely loaded with tools pertaining to Real Estate, Investing, Entreleadership, and Insurance. It also includes many stories from real people.
You also have to feel at ease from the person you’re learning from and be able to relate to his speaking style. In his live seminars and video lessons included in some of his products, Dave displays a style many can relate to, a down-to-Earth, non-preachy style that is simple and infused with humor.
Ramsey is for people who go beyond the conventional wisdom—his advice comes from his own success rising above struggles.
